Nature’s Sanctuary

Offatts Bayou is an estuary located on the east end of Galveston Island. This means the bayou and its surrounding wetlands are home to unique plant and animal communities that have adapted to the brackish water – a mixture of fresh water draining from the land and salty seawater. Estuaries are delicate ecosystems. Many animals rely on estuaries for food, places to breed, and migration stopovers.

Galveston Island is a bird-watching paradise and is home to many year-round species, as well as numerous others that visit briefly or for part of the year. Birds visit en route from and to Central and South America, north in the spring, south in the fall. The Island is also an important wintering ground. Keep your eyes open for the Louisiana Waterthrush, herons and egrets, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Long-billed Curlew, and Dowitchers.
